The sacrifices we make are immeasurable!
FOR MY DAUGHTER is a
brand new powerful drama from the prolific pen of award winning playwright
David Tulloch. The potency of the message does not make the piece entirely a
drama. It's always been a highlight of Tulloch's work, and a secret weapon of
this production to balance intensely dramatic moments with clever humour, as if
to remind us that one of theatre's main functions (especially in comedy-drama)
is to defuse bombs that in real life explode and destroy. However, make no
mistake, FOR MY DAUGHTER is an intimately
revealing and entertaining roller-coaster, featuring some tear-jerker moments,
intensely dramatic moments and elicits big laughs in its more comedic ones. FOR MY DAUGHTER offers a thought-provoking meditation
on the struggles and sacrifices of single motherhood, the cost of deceit, and
the price of dignity and budding love. Throw into the mix themes like class,
hot-button subjects like parental preferences, single parenthood, and a dash of
humour. The play's overwrought conclusion is pretty sentimental stuff, but
audiences will appreciate, and indeed enjoy, this true-to-life tale of love and
family, commitment and consequence. As with previous Tulloch productions, the
process of arriving at the conclusion is a largely meandering and entertaining
ride. To wit, it is best described as a fast-paced and eye-opening look at the
single-mothered family, her daughter and her daughter’s daughter. The
complexities of family, truth, love and opposition are prime themes for the
piece. Tulloch, who likes to provoke audiences with his radical ideas, does an
awesome job of painting a realistic portrait of relationships as well as the
consequences of people’s actions. The sacrifices we make are immeasurable and
you will find this to be true in this truly powerful drama.
